Anti-Piracy ‘Six-Strikes’ Launches in U.S. Amid Concerns

Internet piracy is up against a new strategy in the United States. Similar to French policy, it went into effect on February 25 and is designed to punish subscribers who illegally share movies or music. Known as the “six strike system,” content owners can monitor peer-to-peer networks and take action if they suspect copyright violations. The Copyright Alert System (“CAS”) is a policy created by the Center for Copyright Information with backing from the RIAA and other copyright organizations along with the major internet service providers including AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner, and Verizon. When content owners find a copy, they can trace the IP number through the ISP and notify service providers whenever their customers are suspected of trading copyrighted files online.
