Following public outcry in the form of over a million signatures and considerable criticism from over 100 tech companies, Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) Chairman Tom Wheeler has revised his draft for new rules governing broadband internet providers.
The FCC is scheduled to vote on the modified proposal on May 15, setting up for a final vote later this year.
Critics of the draft, even with revisions, claim that Wheeler’s proposal threatens net neutrality, the concept that all Internet traffic should be treated equally.
The widespread opposition to the new rules also prompted a call from within the FCC to push back the vote by a month in order to allow public conversation to continue due to the “torrent of public response.”
