French authorities have announced that they are fining Google over $400,000 for data privacy violations. In a process that could take a few months, the CNIL said it will now launch formal sanction proceedings.
The National Commission on Computing and Freedom (“CNIL”) says Google has not satisfactorily responded to requests to be more transparent about how the search giant collects data from its users.
The enforcement action by the CNIL comes as a result of its analysis of Google privacy policy changes that were implemented in March 2012.
In June of 2013, the CNIL ordered Google to comply with French data protection laws within three months. According to the CNIL, Google has not changed its policies to comply with French laws by the deadline because the company said that France's data protection laws did not apply to users of certain Google services in France.
