A U.S. District court has shut down a Florida-based robocall operation that may have scammed as much as $13 million nationwide from elderly consumers by tricking them into buying medical alert devices.
At the request of the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) and the Office of the Florida Attorney General, the court froze the assets and temporarily halted the operation. The two agencies are jointly seeking a court order to permanently ban the defendants from engaging in allegedly illegal conduct in the future, as well as providing restitution to the victims of the scam.
Florida Attorney General Pamela Jo Bondi’s office said it received more than 67,000 complaints about the robocall scam. The recorded message claimed a friend or family member paid for a “free” medical alert service.
