With the new year just around the corner, it is important for any companies that collect personally identifiable information (“PII”) online from California residents to remember on January 1, 2014, several amendments to the California Online Privacy Protection Act of 2003 (“CalOPPA”) become effective.
Virtually all commercial Web site or other online service that collect certain types of PII from California residents, will be obligated to comply with the new “do not track” disclosure and breach notification requirements of the new law.
The first amendment, AB370, also known as the tracking bill, requires greater transparency and clear and conspicuous disclosure about how a website responds to a do-not-track signal from a web browser.
