What are the Penalties in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act?

There is civil liability for any debt collector who fails to comply with the provisions of the law.  Damages may be awarded in amount equal to the sum of: (1) any actual damages sustained by an individual; (2) additional damages not to exceed one thousand dollars ($1,000); (3) in class actions the lesser of five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) or 1 per cent of the net worth of the debt collector; (4) costs of the action; and (5) attorney’s fees.
