On December 3, 2024, the Federal Trade Commission (“FTC”) took action against Gravy Analytics Inc. and its subsidiary Venntel Inc. for unlawfully tracking and selling sensitive consumer location data, including information about visits to health-related locations and places of worship. The FTC’s complaint alleges that the companies violated the FTC Act by selling this sensitive data without obtaining verifiable consent from consumers for commercial and government uses. The companies allegedly used geofencing technology to track and sell lists of consumers based on their visits to sensitive locations, such as medical facilities and religious organizations. This data, which was not anonymized, exposed consumers to risks such as discrimination, stigma, and violence.
