FTC Approves Federal Register Notice on Advertising Endorsements and Testimonials
November 21, 2008
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has approved a Federal Register notice to solicit public comments on proposed updates to the Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising. These guides, last revised in 1980, are being considered for revision to address contemporary issues such as consumer endorsements, expert endorsements, and the disclosure of material connections between advertisers and endorsers. The proposed revisions emphasize the need for clear and conspicuous disclosures, particularly when testimonials do not reflect typical consumer experiences. Public feedback on these proposed changes is welcomed until January 30, 2009.
