The U.S. Federal Trade Commission said it needs 55 additional staff to help with its enforcement actions in its 2025 budget request, including 10 dedicated to increasingly complex privacy issues and the rise of artificial intelligence in advertising industries. The Oslo District Court will hear dating app Grindr's appeal of a NOK65 million fine imposed by Norway's data protection authority, Datatilsynet. Norway's Personal Protection Board upheld the fine in September 2023 before Grindr sued the DPA in October 2023.

Sweden's data protection authority, the Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten, released its supervisory plan for 2024. The IMY noted the Supreme Administrative Court of Sweden's decision that companies and individuals who receive a complaint from IMY can appeal the decision. Airbnb banned indoor surveillance devices, including cameras and audio recorders, in its rental properties as part of an update to security policies, NPR reports. The policy takes effect 30 April and will include outdoor cameras in places "where there's a greater expectation of privacy."Full story
France-based startup Nijta aims to protect biometric data collected through artificial intelligence with voice anonymization technology, TechCrunch reports. The technology helps companies comply with privacy laws by removing biometric data collected through speech.
The European Data Protection Supervisor found the European Commission's use of Microsoft 365 violates several provisions of EU Regulation 2018/1725, "the EU's data protection law for EU institutions, bodies, offices and agencies." Notably, the Commission allegedly did not take adequate safeguards to ensure personal data transferred outside the European Economic Area received the same level of protection once transferred to another jurisdiction. The EDPS mandated the Commission suspend all data flows through the use of Microsoft 365 before 9 Dec.
