Facial recognition tool allegedly scraped images of deceased persons to identify living relatives

PimEyes, a tool purporting to help people track their web presence, is accused of scraping images of deceased persons to populate its database, Wired reports. A user, whose nonconsensual images were previously scraped into PimEyes' facial recognition database, found images of her deceased relatives, which she claimed were used to identify her on PimEyes when the company trained its algorithm on them. In response, PimEyes claimed it blocked the Ancestry.com domain, which the images were reportedly scraped from.

OneTrust reshuffles board as part of 'last phase as a private company'

Privacy technology company OneTrust announced a series of changes to its board of directors and governance structure Wednesday, which it says positions the company for future growth. "Today, we have a clear path forward, strong investor demand, and the capital to support this last phase as a private company," CEO Kabir Barday, CIPP/E, CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT, FIP, said. Rounding up proposed CCPA amendments, other California privacy proposals

The deadline for California state legislators to introduce bills for the 2023 legislative session was Feb. 17. Among the introductions were the latest proposed amendments to the California Consumer Privacy Act, along with more narrowly focused privacy bills. Role of DPOs the focus of year-long coordinated enforcement action

The European Data Protection Board announced its 2023 coordinated enforcement action will focus on the designation and position of data protection officers. In this second initiative under the Coordinated Enforcement Framework, 26 data protection authorities will seek to gauge whether DPOs have the organizational position required by Articles 37-39 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation and the resources needed to conduct their work.

CNIL outlines its priority themes in 2023

France’s data protection authority, the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés, published a guide to its "priority themes," which direct its investigations. For 2023, the CNIL will prioritize inquiries dealing with public agencies' use of smart cameras, the use of the personal credit repayment incident files by banks, continued checks on health care institutions accessing digital patient records, and monitoring app makers' use of digital trackers.

ICO launches, updates guidance resources

  • The U.K. Information Commissioner's Office updated its guidance on data protection in artificial intelligence. Sections that received updates include accountability and governance, transparency and lawfulness. The ICO said the changes support "the UK government’s vision of a pro-innovation approach to AI regulation and more specifically its intention to embed considerations of fairness into AI."

European Parliament approves proposed Data Act position

European Parliament voted 500-23 with 110 abstentions to adopt its position on the proposed Data Act. Parliament touted the proposal for establishing "common rules governing the sharing of data generated by the use of connected products or related services ... to ensure fairness in data sharing contracts." Lawmakers also mentioned how artificial intelligence-based products will be better supported and enabled by the proposal.
