ANPD seeks to fill director vacancy

Brazil's data protection authority, the Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados, announced the two-year term of Director Miriam Wimmer, CIPP/E, ended Nov. 6. Wimmer was one of four original directors appointed to the ANPD Board of Directors. ANPD CEO Waldemar Gonçalves said Wimmer carried out her duties with "mastery, competence, commitment and extreme knowledge about personal data protection." Wimmer could be nominated to a second term or Brazil's president may appoint a new director.

Government app a potential 'cyber weapon,' security official says

Politico reports a review of the Egyptian government's smartphone application found it can listen to conversations, access private texts and emails, and track people's locations. Security officials are warning delegates at the COP27 climate summit not to download the app, promoted as a tool for attendees, while officials from Canada, France and Germany have already done so. Politico's analysis also found Egypt's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology can scan devices through the app.

Swedish court rules against IMY for delaying decision on individual's complaint

A Stockholm administrative court ruled an individual who brought a complaint to the Swedish data protection authority, the Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten, has the right to request the decision, following an appeal by the European privacy advocacy organization NOYB. The individual lodged a complaint against music streaming company Spotify with the IMY in 2019.

China seeks comments on revised draft cross-border processing guidelines

China's National Information Security Standardization Technical Committee is seeking comments on a revised draft of the "Practice Guidelines for Cybersecurity Standards — Security Certification Specification for Cross-Border Processing of Personal Information." Public comments can be submitted until Nov. 15. The draft outline includes requirements for an individual overseeing personal information protection and conducting data protection impact assessments.
