Nearly 50 class actions filed over Meta Pixel’s video tracking

Consumers have filed nearly 50 proposed class-action lawsuits against dozens of companies since February claiming Meta Platforms' Pixel video tracking tool shared video consumption data without consent, Bloomberg Law reports. The suits allege companies that host videos — including news outlets and streaming services — are in violation of the federal Video Privacy Protection Act.

FTC's Slaughter hints ANPRM comment extension, unpacks privacy rulemaking goals

During an appearance at IAPP Privacy. Security. Risk. 2022, U.S. Federal Trade Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter hinted at an extension to the commission's public comment period for the Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for commercial surveillance and lax data security. The original comment deadline was Oct. 21, but Slaughter not-so-subtly indicated "a short extension of a few weeks" was likely to be announced in the coming days.

Op-ed: California, UK should influence lawmakers in modernizing privacy laws

In an op-ed for The Globe and Mail, former U.K. Information Commissioner and international consultant for Baker McKenzie’s data and tech practice Elizabeth Denham said Canadian lawmakers should turn to regulations in the U.K. and California as they modernize privacy laws. The U.K.’s Age Appropriate Design Code inspired similar legislation in California, each establishing protections for children online. “Any future made-in-Canada regulations should codify children’s existing rights. Then, we must let tech companies do what they do best: innovate to the desired outcome,” Denham said.

Garante investigates app that falsifies voices

Italy’s data protection authority, the Garante, is investigating an application that reproduces false, realistic voices of well-known individuals. The Garante has asked “The Storyteller Company — Fakeyou” to provide information on how its technology works, what personal information is processed and the purposes for data processing. The company must also provide the location of any data centers that maintain personal data.

Australian regulators investigate telecommunications provider breach

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and Australian Communications and Media Authority are investigating a data breach that affected 10 million Optus cellular customers, Reuters reports. The OAIC said it will investigate the company’s data protection efforts and compliance with privacy laws, while the ACMA is investigating whether its maintenance and disposal of personal data meets industry obligations.
