Google to pay $62M in location privacy settlement

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California agreed to the settlement terms of Google's location privacy lawsuit that would require Google to pay USD62 million, MediaPost reports. The class-action lawsuit accused Google of storing "location data harvested from some services, including search and maps, even when users have attempted to prevent the data collection."Full story

Israel's PPA issues report on digital health care industry

Israel's Privacy Protection Agency issued analysis of health care providers' data privacy compliance. The PPA report is based on a survey to health entities on organizational and corporate governance, database management and information security. Following discovery and notice of compliance shortcomings, the PPA found the 45% of noncompliant entities corrected the previously cited issues.Full story

Op-ed: Global Privacy Control restricts consumers' need for tailored ads

In an op-ed for AdExchanger, Neolaw co-founder and Privacy Lawyer Andy Hepburn, CIPP/US, said the Global Privacy Control that allows consumers to opt out of targeted advertisements is too restrictive. Hepburn said a better approach for GPC settings "would enable advertisers to deliver relevant ads to consumers for the products and services that interest them."Full story

FISA Section 702 renewal bill clears procedural vote in US Senate

The U.S. Senate opened debate on reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act with a 67-32 procedural vote, CNN reports. It is unclear if the Senate will formally pass the House bill for renewing FISA before Section 702 sunsets 19 April. Bipartisan opposition to renew could draw out the voting process to as late as 21 April.
