Op-ed: US state privacy laws must include data minimization

In an op-ed with the Center for Democracy and Technology, CDT co-Director of the Privacy and Data Project Eric Null said U.S. state privacy laws that do not include data minimization are missing an important element of data protection. Law enforcement is preparing for an increase in child sex abuse material generated by artificial intelligence that could make it harder for police to identify victims, The New York Times reports. Officials are concerned with unrestricted access to AI because "perpetrators can create scores of images of children being sexually exploited or abused with the click of a button." Full story

CCPA children's privacy amendment introduced

California Attorney General Rob Bonta and members of the California State Legislature introduced 2024 bills covering youth privacy and growing issues with minors' use of social media. The proposed Children's Data Privacy Act aims to amend the California Consumer Privacy Act to tighten youth coverage. Both proposals seek to complement the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act, which is under injunction during an ongoing legal challenge.
