Ransomware payments more than doubled in first half of 2023

Ransomware payments in extortion schemes have increased significantly since last year, TechTarget reports, citing research from cryptocurrency analytics firm Chainalysis. Chainalysis found ransomware gangs extorted more than USD449.1 million in the first half of 2023, which is approximately USD175 million more than the amount extorted by victims of ransomware attacks during the same timeframe last year.

The hacker is now allegedly offering 4GB of the stolen passport data on a hacking forum for USD10,000, according to a screenshot obtained by the founder of Ethical Hacker Indonesia. The data breach is under investigation by Indonesian authorities.

Google's Product Director Jack Krawczyk said discussions with data protection authorities resulted in a focus on transparency around data use and giving users a choice over Google's use of their information.
