Up-and-coming lawyers compete in Helsinki Information Law Moot court

The fifth annual Helsinki Information Law Moot court competition was held 17 March. Aspiring lawyers were given the opportunity "to apply their knowledge and interest" in the field of personal data and data protection by organizers Tobias Bräutigam, CIPP/E, CIPM, FIP, a partner and Head of Data Protection at the law firm Bird & Bird, and Sam Wrigley, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki.

Tech CEOs to discuss AI at White House, and other news

  • Reuters reports the CEOs of Google, Microsoft, OpenAI and Anthropic will discuss artificial intelligence issues with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and top administration officials at the White House. An invitation from President Joe Biden noted an "expectation that companies like yours must make sure their products are safe before making them available to the public."

Khan: FTC stands ready to 'vigorously enforce' AI

In an op-ed in The New York Times, U.S. Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan said generative artificial intelligence will be "highly disruptive," and the agency "will vigorously enforce" its laws "even in this new market." She said, "We once again find ourselves at a key decision point. Can we continue to be the home of world-leading technology without accepting race-to-the-bottom business models and monopolistic control that locks out higher quality products or the next big idea?

DMA provisions on gatekeepers to apply

With the EU's Digital Markets Act taking effect 2 May, the European Commission said potential online gatekeepers have until 3 July to notify their core platform services. The commission will then have until 6 Sept. to determine gatekeepers, and those designated will have until March 2024 to comply with the DMA. The commission also published a Q&A on the DMA, covering who will be subject to the regulation, what it means to be designated a gatekeeper and more.

Exploring the scope of the Indiana Consumer Data Protection Act

On the heels of Iowa, Indiana became the seventh U.S. state to pass a comprehensive privacy law. While Indiana differentiated itself by providing covered entities with more than two and a half years to come into compliance, IAPP Westin Research Fellow Anokhy Desai, CIPP/US, CIPM, CIPT, writes there is substantial overlap between the Indiana Consumer Data Protection Act and three of the six state privacy laws, and organizations that have already implemented compliance processes with other states should not expect a major compliance overhaul.
