US prosecutors seek 15 month sentence for former Uber CISO

U.S. prosecutors asked a federal judge to sentence former Uber Chief Information Security Officer Joe Sullivan to 15 months in prison after he obstructed an investigation into the company, BankInfoSecurity reports. In October 2022, Sullivan was convicted on charges of obstruction and misprision of a felony, "which refers to knowing something is a felony and covering it up." The charges stemmed from an hacking incident in 2017, where Sullivan oversaw the payment of USD100,000 in Bitcoin to two hackers under the guise of a "bug bounty" payment, but mislead the U.S.

Australian regulators: Get 'back to basics' this Privacy Awareness Week

Marking Privacy Awareness Week 2023, 1-7 May, Australian privacy regulators urged individuals, organizations and agencies to get "back to basics" on privacy. In a joint statement, regulators from New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria joined Information and Privacy Commissioner Angelene Falk in noting organizations and agencies should collect only necessary personal information, take steps to reasonably protect it and delete or permanently deidentify data when it is no longer needed.

ChatGPT resolves Garante's data protection concerns

TechCrunch reports Italy's data protection authority, the Garante, removed its limited block of OpenAI's ChatGPT after the company rectified alleged data protection issues. The regulator ordered limits on the popular generative artificial intelligence tool's data collection 31 March and gave OpenAI a 30 April compliance deadline over EU General Data Protection Regulation allegations concerning legal bases for processing data and children's data protection.

China's SCCs translated

The IAPP published in its Resource Center an unofficial English translation of China's standard contractual clauses, created by Reed Smith. Released by the Cyberspace Administration, China's SCCs and SCC Regulations are effective 1 June and indicate that all three major legal mechanisms under China's Personal Information Protection Law are fully established with the necessary details for implementation.Full Story

US military bought 'granular movement data' from third parties

The U.S. military "is buying the granular movement data of people around the world" through the location services in a number of popular apps, Vice reports. Apps including a Quran app with 98 million downloads around the world and popular classified listing app Craigslist were among those the military is harvesting data from. The publication "uncovered two separate, parallel data streams" the U.S.

Starbucks may face class-action lawsuit over cookie consent management

A group of U.S. attorneys is looking to speak with Starbucks customers from California, Florida and Pennsylvania as part of a potential privacy-related class-action lawsuit, ClassAction.org reports. Customers who went to Starbucks.com and changed their cookie settings to only "required cookies" may have had their privacy violated, the attorneys claim.
