AEPD publishes its 2022 report

Spain’s data protection authority, the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos, received the largest number of claims in its existence, according to its 2022 report released 25 April. In 2022, the AEPD received 15,128 claims, which represented a 9% increase from 2021 and a 47% increase from 2020. In response, the AEPD imposed fines in 378 cases. The most frequent issues raised by citizens involved internet services and video surveillance, which combined for 30% of complaints last year.

Montana, Tennessee jump into the US comprehensive state privacy field

The growth of U.S. comprehensive state privacy law has hit a boom in 2023. Four state legislatures have given final passage to comprehensive bills this year, including the latest passages on the same day in Montana and Tennessee 21 April. Both bills, which now await enactment pending a governor's signature, carry likeness to existing state privacy laws while presenting some originality. If enacted, Tennessee's bill takes force 1 July 2024, while Montana's bill follows 1 Oct. 2024.

Israel committee approves adoption of draft regulations on data transfers from EEA

Israel's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee approved the adoption of the draft Privacy Protection Regulations on the transfer of data from the European Economic Area to Israel. The regulations include provisions on deleting data upon request, deleting excess personal data, maintaining accuracy of personal data, and obligations to notify that data has been transferred. Full Story

Data localization provisions removed from draft DPDPB

India's Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajeev Chandrasekhar said data localization provisions were changed in the recent version of the proposed Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, The Hindu Business Line reports. "We want to create a framework for every legislation that allows it to evolve and we certainly will not impose hardcore data localisation as a condition," Chandrasekhar said.

AEPD releases list of all sanctioned public administrations

Spain’s data protection authority, the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos, published a list of public administrations "sanctioned" for failing to uphold citizens' rights to data protection. Some public administrations did not comply with AEPD information requirements and others did "not adapt the data processing to the law and (did) not accredit the corrective measures imposed." Other administrations did not appoint a data protection delegate despite being a locality of more than 20,000 citizens.

Mobile data broker asks judge to dismiss class action suit

Mobile data broker Kochava asked an Idaho District Court judge to dismiss a U.S. class-action lawsuit brought by California and Washington state smartphone users who allege the company sold their geolocation data, MediaPost reports. The company claimed users could not assert they were harmed as the result of the alleged sale, and even if they could, the company claimed it did not violate state law.
