US reps. reintroduce Online Privacy Act

U.S. Reps. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., and Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif., refiled the Online Privacy Act. The comprehensive federal privacy proposal offers user data rights, requires limitations and obligations on data practices and establishes a data protection authority. Garante publishes dark patterns resource

Italy's data protection authority, the Garante, published an information page on dark patterns. The Garante said the resource explores the "increasingly widespread phenomenon" of deceptive design patterns that are "still unknown to most users of digital services" and is "part of a large information and awareness project on data protection, digital education and safety, for a conscious use of the Internet and new technologies."Full Story

US Rep. Castor to reintroduce Kids PRIVCY Act

U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, D-Fla., said she plans to reintroduce the Protecting the Information of our Vulnerable Children and Youth Act, known as the Kids PRIVCY Act, MediaPost reports. The bill would restrict collection of teens' data by online companies. "Few things are more concerning to me than the ways Big Tech, including data brokers, have proliferated the surveillance and targeting of our kids," Castor said.

NY attorney general publishes data security guide for businesses

New York Attorney General Letitia James published a guide with recommendations to help businesses prevent data breaches and protect consumers' personal information. Tips include maintaining secure authentication controls, encrypting sensitive customer information, ensuring third-party vendors are using appropriate security measures, guarding against attacks, and quick and accurate data breach notification measures.

Consent management vendor partners with Swiss 'age estimation' AI company

Consent management developer PrivacyCheq announced a new partnership with Swiss-based online safety technology developer Privately, according to a press release. The partnership will incorporate Privately's Age-Assure artificial intelligence "age estimation" solution as part of PrivacyCheq's product to meet child protection requirements under laws like the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and the EU General Data Protection Regulation.
