Belgian DPA conducts DPO survey

Belgium's data protection authority, the APD, is focusing on the role of data protection officers as a 2023 priority and is participating in the European Data Protection Board's coordinated enforcement action. The APD said it mailed a survey to DPOs that explores tasks within their organization, workflow methods, expectations and more. Results will be aggregated in a public report.

Maine reintroduces biometric privacy legislation similar to Illinois' BIPA

Members of the Maine Legislature reintroduced a biometric information privacy bill, similar to Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act, StateScoop reports. As proposed, Maine's bill would "prohibit private entities from selling (biometric) information" and require written consent from an individual before another entity can acquire that person's biometric data.

German regulators probe ChatGPT for GDPR compliance; Funding announced for UK AI task force

  • Regulators in Germany launched an investigation into OpenAI's privacy practices and EU General Data Protection Regulation compliance, Cointelegraph reports. Commissioner for the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein said regulators want to know if OpenAI has conducted a data protection impact assessment and "if the data protection risks are under control." 

EDPB to reveal leadership candidates

The European Data Protection Board will unveil candidates to assume board chair and deputy chairs at its 26 April plenary meeting. The board began circulating information in February on the election process for successors to EDPB Chair Andrea Jelinek and Deputy Chairs Ventsislav Karadjov and Aleid Wolfsen. Each position is a five-year renewable term.
