HHS swears in new OCR director

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra swore in Melanie Fontes Rainer Sept. 14 to lead HHS’ Office for Civil Rights. Fontes Rainer was OCR's acting director since August and previously served as Becerra’s counselor, where she focused on issues such as consumer protection, patient privacy and reproductive health.

EDPB to focus coordinated enforcement on DPO appointments

The European Data Protection Board announced its next coordinated enforcement action will focus on the data protection officer designations. The 22 supervisory authorities across the European Economic Area, along with the European Data Protection Supervisor, will launch investigations into yet-to-be-determined aspects of DPO requirements under the EU General Data Protection Regulation.

GAO supports federal privacy law; US Chamber outlines principles for federal legislation

  • The U.S. Government Accountability Office published a report on increased risks to consumer data privacy, recommending U.S. Congress pass federal privacy legislation to curb rising issues. The report called attention to issues with consumer scores and facial recognition technology while urging increased authority and resourcing to regulatory agencies like the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

IAB report details digital marketing "uncertainty" over third-party cookie phaseouts

MarTech reports digital marketers face an uncertainty due to “fragmented” privacy laws around the world and the “inconsistent” shift away from third-party cookies, citing the Internet Advertising Bureau’s “State of Data 2022 (Part II)." The report found businesses prefer a comprehensive federal privacy law, as "complying with the different privacy requirements of different state laws is making data collection and use increasingly unwieldy." Additionally, only 20% of first-party data comes from "known" users, "leaving the remaining 80% less reachable and addressable," the IAB found.

Twitter whistleblower accuses former employer of ignoring security vulnerabilities, misleading regulators

Twitter former head of security Peiter Zatko testified about his prior employer’s lax security standards before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. Zatko said company leadership ignored security vulnerabilities, covered up security failures, and mislead regulators and lawmakers. He told senators the Federal Trade Commission was under-resourced to be able to enforce privacy regulations on platforms, such as Twitter.
