Consumer Reports Innovation Lab launches app for Data Rights Protocol

The Consumer Reports Innovation Lab is launching a testing application for the Data Rights Protocol, an open standard for exchanging data rights requests to make it easier for companies to comply with consumer privacy laws. The app, OSIRAA v0.5, is available on GitHub and can be used by "both authorized agent and privacy infrastructure provider companies looking to implement the protocol," Lead Engineer John Szinger said.

US Senate bill would require disclosure of microphones, cameras in smart devices

U.S. Sens. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, support the Informing Consumers About Smart Devices Act, requiring developers of the devices to disclose microphones or cameras within products prior to purchase, PoliticoPRO reports. The bill grants enforcement powers to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, which will also be in charge of creating guidelines around disclosure.

US senators urge FTC to investigate breach of Twitter consent decree

Seven U.S. senators have called for investigations into "any breach" of Twitter's 2011 consent decree with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission "or other violations of our consumer protection laws." Transportation second-most targeted industry for ransomware in third quarter

Transportation was the second-most targeted industry in the world for ransomware and “nation-state backed advanced persistent threat” actors in the third quarter of 2022, The Economic Times of India reports. According to cybersecurity firm Trellix’s quarterly “The Threat Report,” U.S. ransomware attacks increased 100% quarter-over-quarter in the transportation and shipping industries. Germany saw the highest increase of ransomware and APT attacks last quarter at 32% and 29%, respectively.

Grieving US parents push Congress to act

Parents whose children died from cyberbullying and drug-laced products purchased on mobile applications are pushing U.S. Congress to pass two bills to tighten children’s cybersecurity, The Hill reports. The Kids Online Safety Act and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act 2.0 both passed out of a Senate committee in July. KOSA would establish a "duty of care for social media platforms to prevent and mitigate harm to minors,” while requiring the “strictest privacy settings” as the default for minors.

Amazon to ask US appellate court to force arbitration with employee

Amazon will ask the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to mandate individual arbitration with a delivery driver, Bloomberg reports. Previously, a U.S. district court declined Amazon Flex delivery driver Drickey Jackson’s proposed class-action lawsuit against Amazon for allegedly surveilling his private Facebook group correspondence with other drivers. Jackson brought the lawsuit to court under California consumer privacy laws and federal wiretapping laws.
