DPC 2022: Proposed UK data protection reform gains steam

U.K. Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Deputy Director for Domestic Data Protection Policy Owen Rowland told privacy professionals at the IAPP Data Protection Congress 2022 in Brussels, Belgium, that the latest consultation on the stalled proposed Data Protection and Digital Information Bill will begin shortly. Meta seeks to overturn Irish DPC fine, settles privacy case in US

Meta hopes the Irish High Court will “quash” its 405 million euro fine for reportedly violating children’s privacy on its Instagram platform, the Irish Examiner reports. The move comes after Ireland's Data Protection Commission issued a fine to Meta in September after personally identifiable information of teenage Instagram users was automatically published under default settings, which has since been corrected.

FBI director says TikTok raises national security concerns

U.S. FBI Director Christopher Wray recently told lawmakers that TikTok’s U.S. operations raise "national security concerns," Reuters reports. He claimed the Chinese government could potentially use the application to control users' devices and "control data collection on millions of users or control the recommendation algorithm" and “influence operations.” A TikTok spokesperson said the FBI’s input is only one element of the U.S.
