FTC approves enforcement order against GM for selling vehicle location data

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission voted 3-0, with two commissioners absent, to issue a sanction order against automaker General Motors and subsidiary OnStar for alleged collection and sale of customers' geolocation data. Under the proposed order, GM and OnStar would be barred from disclosing driver's location data for five years and must obtain consent before selling driver data.

MEPs, Council of the European Union at crossroads over EDPS appointment

Politico reports the Council of the European Union voted European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski to remain in his post after the European Parliament selected European Commission Head of International Data Flows and Protection Bruno Gencarelli as their candidate. Council representatives and MEPs must negotiate on a consensus candidate, but an ongoing stalemate would force the council to establish additional procedural steps prior to a new vote.Full story
