US retailer to begin targeted ads based on shoppers' data

Wholesale retailer Costco will begin a targeted advertising network that will allow companies to target its members' purchase history, MarketingBrew reports. VaynerMedia Global Head of Retail Media Mike Feldman said, with the amount of data Costco has collected from its 74.5 million members, the company could "build a significant competitive advantage in the marketplace."Full story

CNIL publishes overview of recent sanctions via simplified procedure mechanism

France's data protection authority, the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés, has issued nine sanctions since March under its simplified procedure mechanism. The sanctions totaled 83,000 euros and were generally attributed to violations, such as a breach related to unlawful processing of personal data, failure to engage in data minimization practices and a lack of cooperation with the CNIL.  Full story

OAIC to pursue AUD21.5 trillion fine against health insurer for 2022 breach

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner is pursuing a AUD21.5 trillion fine against health insurer Medibank in connection with its 2022 data breach that exposed the sensitive personal data of more than 9 million citizens, ABC News reports. "This is a wakeup call because it really sends the message to companies that this is an issue of corporate responsibility, as well as a legal responsibility," Privacy Commissioner Carly Kind said.
