EDPS: Data protection and cybersecurity 'inseparable'

In a blog post, European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski said cybersecurity and data protection are "inseparable." Noting the EDPS will participate in the EU's Cybersecurity Month in October, Wiewiórowski said the EDPS supports "a legal, strategic, and operational approach to cybersecurity that integrates by design fundamental rights, including the rights to privacy and to the protection of personal data, which are key to protecting the EU's citizens and the EU's data from cyberattacks."

FCC proposes reclassifying broadband as 'telecommunications service'

The U.S. Federal Communication Commission issued a notice of proposed rulemaking 28 Sept. to reassert its authority over broadband internet and regulate for "protection of consumers’ privacy and data security interests." The notice would allow the FCC to classify the internet as a telecommunications service under Title II of the Communications Act.

NIST announces newly named Human-Centered Cybersecurity program

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology renamed its Usable Cybersecurity program the Human-Centered Cybersecurity program. NIST said the change better represents the "broader scope of work we provide for the cybersecurity practitioner and IT professional communities" and its mission statement, "championing the human in cybersecurity."Full story

Privacy Commissioner of Canada Philippe Dufresne addressed members of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Innovation and Technology on Bill C-27 28 Sept. Dufresne outlined 15 recommendations to improve the legislation and said, overall, the bill represents an "improvement" over the existing Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.

India's DPDPA Part 2: Individual rights

India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 creates a new framework for the protection of digital personal data, offering four broad rights to "data principals" and setting compliance tasks for "data fiduciaries." Spice Route Legal Partner Mathew Chacko, Counsel Aadya Misra and Associate Ajeeth Srinivas explain the individual rights offered in the DPDPA, saying the act "has paved the road for the creation of a concrete system of data principal rights."
