US GAO recommends changes to law enforcement facial recognition use

The U.S. Government Accountability Office found seven law enforcement agencies in the Departments of Homeland Security and Justice reported using facial recognition services in criminal investigations from Oct. 2019 through March 2022 without requiring staff training. The office made 10 recommendations, including a training requirement for the FBI.

CNIL addresses data protection in environmental context

France's data protection authority, the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés, issued a report on data minimization as a means for environmental protection. The "Data, Footprints and Freedoms" report explores whether data protection as a whole can contribute to environmental preservation.

NOYB files complaints against French apps' data sharing

Privacy advocacy group NOYB filed complaints in France alleging electronics store Fnac, real estate app SeLoger and health app MyFitnessPal illegally accessed and shared users' personal data, Cybernews reports. NOYB alleged the companies collected and shared user data with third parties for analytics once the apps were opened on Android smartphones.

ICO encourages data sharing to protect children's safety

U.K. Information Commissioner John Edwards encouraged all organizations to share data in the name of protecting children online. Edwards said entities and frontline workers in child-facing industries should not fear legal repercussions for sharing data that save children from abuse or neglect.Full story

AEPD explores considerations with digital currencies

Spain's data protection authority, the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos, blogged about data protection practices for digital currencies. The regulator said "privacy and data minimization must be guaranteed from the design" with any currency deployment and "an appropriate balance must be ensured between data protection and other objectives, such as the fight against tax evasion, money laundering and terrorist financing."Full story

The California Privacy Protection Agency's proposed California Privacy Rights Act regulations concerning risk assessments and cybersecurity audits would "effectively impose major cybersecurity requirements on covered businesses," Stanford Cyber Policy Center Senior Advisor James Dempsey writes.

FTC alleges Musk violated consent decree during X ownership

Elon Musk's ownership of X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, allegedly resulted in several violations of a 2011 U.S. Federal Trade Commission consent decree after it "deceptively collected users' data," The Washington Post reports, citing a U.S. Department of Justice filing.
