Ontario IPC, HRC call for AI rules

In a joint statement, the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario and the Ontario Human Rights Commission announced a collaboration "to provide Ontarians with a better understanding of their privacy rights concerning artificial intelligence technologies." The IPC and OHRC also said it is "urgent for the government to establish a binding set of robust and granular rules for public sector use of AI technologies," noting they must "effectively address safety, privacy, accountability, transparency (including access to information), and human rights." FTC fines Microsoft $20M for alleged COPPA violations

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced a USD20 million fine against Microsoft for alleged Children's Online Privacy Protection Act violations related to its Xbox gaming system. The FTC claimed Microsoft did not obtain parental consent for Xbox account data collection on users under age 13 before carrying out the collection. Corrective actions in the proposed order, which is subject to federal court approval, call on Microsoft to obtain parental consent for any outstanding nonconsensual Xbox accounts and stand up a data deletion program.

Vestager, Breton's approaches to pre-AI Act standards initiatives

Euractiv reports on the differences between European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager and Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton in their goals and approaches to artificial intelligence regulation. Both commissioners are driving separate outreach initiatives aimed at getting AI developers to conform to standards and governance practices prior to the eventual passing of the proposed AI Act.

Zoom now offers data localization in EEA for paid customers

Video conferencing provider Zoom launched several new privacy features for European Economic Area users, The Record reports. Customers who pay for Zoom’s enhanced service in the EEA will be allowed to localize their data within the EEA and it would only be shared with U.S.-based Zoom engineers "in individual cases and exceptional circumstances," which could include sharing with Zoom’s Trust and Safety team.
