White House executive order directs agencies to address 'algorithmic discrimination'

An executive order issued by U.S. President Joe Biden directed federal agencies to address "discrimination" within algorithms used by technology companies, MediaPost reports. U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., who co-sponsored the Algorithmic Justice and Online Platform Transparency Act of 2021, praised the order saying, "If we are going to address discrimination today, we have to open the hood on Big Tech.

Op-ed: Twitter fee for data access could be 'at odds with EU law'

In an op-ed for Euractiv, Democracy Reporting International Digital Democracy Program Officer Lena-Maria Böswald said Twitter's fee for access to its developer application programming interface could be "at odds with EU law." She said access to platform data for eligible researchers is required to comply with European law, but it is unclear whether the EU Digital Services Act explicitly requires free access.
