CPPA files CPRA regulations with state's Office of Administrative Law

The California Privacy Protection Agency sent its first set of proposed final California Privacy Rights Act regulations to the state's Office of Administrative Law. The filing marks the start of a 30-day review window for the OAL to amend and approve the proposed regulations. The CPPA reiterated the regulations are not effective until after the review and further procedural steps, which the agency previously stated would allow the regulations to take effect in April at the earliest.

EDPB to decide on Meta data transfer case by April 14

Politico reports the European Data Protection Board will deliver its binding decision regarding the lawfulness of Meta's EU-U.S. data transfers by April 14. The EDPB's ruling, via a dispute resolution mechanism under Article 65 of the EU General Data Protection Regulation, concerns Meta's reliance on standard contractual clauses to facilitate EU-U.S. transfers under the now invalidated EU-U.S. Privacy Shield.

Google opens beta version of Privacy Sandbox for Android

Google unveiled a beta version of its Privacy Sandbox for Android, Engadget reports. The sandbox is Google’s “attempt to blend user privacy with targeted advertising” and replace tracking cookies. A major component of the sandbox is the “Topics API,” which generates a list of a user’s top interests and runs a comparison from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and Google’s data.

MEPs oppose EU-US adequacy under proposed DPF

The European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs urged the European Commission to deny the U.S. adequacy status based on the proposed EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. MEPs called on the European Commission to renegotiate its data transfer agreement with the U.S. in the recently published draft of their nonbinding opinion, raising issues regarding a lack of equivalent protections and insufficient EU consumer redress.

European Commission holds DMA stakeholder workshops

The European Commission is holding technical workshops on specific issues and questions related to implementation and compliance with the Digital Markets Act. A Feb. 27 workshop will explore interoperability between messaging services and address issues including "end-to-end encryption, security or the identification of users across different messaging services." New draft cybersecurity law reconsiders critical connected devices

The Swedish presidency of the EU Council of ministers shared new compromise text of the draft Cyber Resilience Act with changes to the categorization of "critical" and "highly critical" connected devices, Euractiv reports. Products that perform a key security function will be considered "critical" under the compromise text, while products with important security functions that are also central to the Internet of Things environment will be classified "highly critical." The Cybersecurity Working Party will discuss the new text Feb.
