In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Duke University School of Law professor of law and philosophy Nita Farahany said employers are increasingly using neurotechnology to monitor employees, and privacy law hasn't kept up. Farahany said much can be learned about a person from their brain data and "we ought to have a special place we think about when it comes to the brain. Meta tool increases ad transparency

Meta announced its "Why am I seeing this ad?" tool will include information on how machine learning is used to deliver advertisements based on a users' activity, MediaPost reports. Meta Global Policy Director, Monetization Privacy and Fairness, Pedro Pavón, CIPP/US, said examples and illustrations explaining how machine-learning models connect topics to show relevant ads will also be included.

Washington state bill would protect children from being exploited in for-profit vlogs

The Washington state Legislature will hold a public hearing on a bill to protect minors from being exploited in for-profit vlogs, NBC News reports. The bill would require parents of “child influencers” to take revenue from their content and set aside in a separate fund for their children for when they become adults.

Generative AI tools raise concerns, prompt potential regulation

As generative artificial intelligence tools raise concerns over data collection, misinformation and bias, lawmakers are exploring potential regulation, The Hill reports. Carnegie Mellon University professor Rayid Ghani said regulators "don't necessarily have a good handle on how to regulate" the emerging technologies, while co-Director of the Privacy and Data Project at the Center for Democracy and Technology Nathalie Maréchal said the tools highlight the need for lawmakers to pass a comprehensive U.S.

FTC Commissioner Wilson resigns

In an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, U.S. Federal Trade Commissioner Christine Wilson announced her resignation from the agency. Wilson accused FTC Chair Lina Khan as having "disregard for the rule of law and due process" in the way she runs the agency, adding her resignation marks a refusal "to give their endeavor any further hint of legitimacy." Wilson was publicly critical of Khan's leadership in recent months.
