Publicly-reported data breaches fell in the first half of 2022, Government Technology reports. Citing a report from the Identity Theft Resource Center, cybercriminals adjusted their targets toward businesses and government institutions. In the first half of this year, 817 data breaches were reported in the U.S., which represents a 4% decrease from the same timeframe in 2021. The volume of affected persons decreased to 53.4 million, a decline of 45% from last year.
The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology is in the process of updating its “Privacy Framework” document. To help develop the new framework, NIST created the Privacy Workforce Public Working Group, which is composed of approximately 750 privacy professionals from the commercial and public sectors, civil society, and academia. The California Legislature moved to address children's online safety concerns with final passage of Assembly Bill 2273, the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act. The bill, which awaits enactment by Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., after unanimously passing the State Assembly and Senate, contains unique privacy requirements to protect minors age 17 and under. If enacted, the bill would come into force Jan. 1, 2024.
Brazil's data protection authority, the Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados, seeks stakeholder feedback on potential guidelines for processing high-risk personal data. The ANPD's intention with the guidance is to "assist small processing agents in the evaluation of the processing of personal data carried out by them." The two-part questionnaire for feedback is aimed at processing agents and the general public. The comment deadline is Sept.
