Turkey's DPA approves SCCs, BCRs

Turkey's data protection authority, the Kişisel Verileri Koruma Kurumu, issued a notice on amendments to Article 9 of the Law on the Protection of Personal Data concerning personal data transfers abroad. The amendments allow for organizations to utilize standard contractual clauses and permit binding corporate rules to transfer personal data outside of Turkey.

Saudi Arabia's DPA opens consultation on DPO appointment rules

The Saudi Authority for Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority commenced a public consultation on draft rules for data protection officer appointments. The rules clearly outline DPO qualifications and instances where data controllers must appoint a DPO, while detailing additional responsibilities an officer must take up in addition to those laid out under Article 32(3) of the Implementing Regulation of the Personal Data Protection Law.

Privacy personnel departures at Google raise concerns for US lawmakers

Politico reports departures of six privacy and compliance officials at Google in the last several months, as well as disbanding its machine learning privacy team, is causing concern among U.S. lawmakers. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., questioned if the recent moves at Google suggest the company could be in violation of a 2011 Federal Trade Commission order to maintain a "comprehensive privacy program."Full story

FCC announces $34.6M settlement over improper call data retention

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission entered a consent decree with a company offering call-assist technology for hearing-impaired persons to resolve an investigation into its alleged practice of unlawfully retaining call information beyond the duration of a call. CaptionCall will pay a USD34.6 million settlement, which is to be divided between investments in "privacy and data protection enhancements," civil penalties and other remedies.

GPEN announces results of privacy sweep of more than 1,000 websites, apps

The Global Privacy Enforcement Network announced it completed a review of more than 1,000 websites and apps, finding a vast majority employed at least one deceptive design pattern "that made it difficult for users to make privacy-protective decisions." The review involved officials from 26 global data protection authorities and was conducted between 29 Jan.-2 Feb.Full story
