Maryland passes 'Kids Code'

The Maryland General Assembly passed Senate Bill 571 concerning consumer protection, online services and use of children's personal data, otherwise known as the "Maryland Kids Code." The bill requires companies offering products or services online to complete a data protection impact assessment documenting certain risks products could pose to children's online safety prior to 1 April 2026.

EDPS presents annual report

European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski delivered his annual report to the European Parliament Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. The report places an emphasis on adaptability "in light of digital and regulatory advancements" in 2023, Wiewiórowski said.

Stolen third-party cookies could allow hackers to verify data

Hackers could verify stolen data by analyzing third-party cookies and logging into online accounts without having a password, MediaPost reports. NordVPN Security Advisory Board Member Adrianus Warmenhoven said that if an active cookie is stolen, "an attacker can potentially login into your account without having your password or needing (multifactor authentication)."Full story

CNIL fines retail chain for alleged spam messages

France's data protection authority, the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés, fined technology retail chain Hubside.Store 525,000 euros for allegedly using unsolicited phone calls and text messages to promote products sold in its stores. The CNIL claims the retailer purchased prospective customers' personal data from data brokers and did not obtain valid consent to target them with promotions.Full story
