California approves protections against AI-generated deepfakes

Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., enacted bills to limit the use and subsequent harms of AI-generated deepfakes and likeness replication. Arguments begin in TikTok divestment appeal

The New York Times reports on TikTok's bid for an injunction against the U.S. government's law compelling the platform to divest from ByteDance, its Chinese parent company, to continue U.S. operations. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit questioned TikTok's arguments alleging it was singled out by the new law while the government was probed over the law's First Amendment concerns. If the law stands, TikTok must find a U.S.-based owner by 19 Jan.
