The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce's Innovation, Data and Commerce Subcommittee will host a 17 April hearing focused on several data privacy and online safety bills up for house consideration, including the proposed American Privacy Rights Act. The committee will also debate the proposed Kids Online Safety Act, proposed updates to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act and more.
According to U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Rohit Chopra, the federal government is taking a more holistic approach to consumer data privacy protection and widening its scope beyond assisting individuals from identity theft. The Netherlands' data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, issued an advisory regarding data breach reporting. The AP called back to its annual report, which said it handled more than 25,000 data breach reports affecting 20 million people in 2023. The U.S. House of Representatives arranged a vote 10 April for the potential reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, Wired reports. The potential reauthorization, which could include amendments to require a warrant to search U.S. persons' communications, faces political and policy challenges ahead of the vote.
