US Congressional Research Service outlines constitutional privacy rights for family planning

Council of the European Union circulates new AI Act compromise

Euractiv reports the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union released its latest compromise text for the proposed Artificial Intelligence Act. The newest updates from the council concern classifying high-risk AI deployments and the obligations providers take on with each category. Additional tweaks were made to alter the definition of AI, add an exemption for research and development initiatives that use AI, and update the list of prohibited AI applications.

Lawsuit accuses Facebook of inserting tracking code into in-app browser

In a federal class-action lawsuit, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is accused of tracking smartphone users through its in-application browser, MediaPost reports. The lawsuit, filed Sept. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleged the company collected users’ data by inserting a tracking code into websites users visit when using Facebook's browser. California resident Wayne Mitchell alleged Meta violated the federal wiretap law and several California state laws.

UN report details threats to global digital privacy, human rights

The United Nations Office for the High Commissioner of Human Rights issued a report detailing how “modern networked digital technologies” threaten individuals’ privacy. The report examined three areas: spyware abuse by world governments, the role of encryption in protecting human rights online and the impacts of digital surveillance of public spaces.

Governor signs California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act

Gov. Gavin Newsom, D-Calif., signed Assembly Bill 2273, the California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act, into law. Newsom called the law an "aggressive action" on "the real issues our children are experiencing online" while praising its provisions for children's data processing limits and data protection impact assessments on online services that could be accessed by minors. He also mentioned the Children’s Data Protection Working Group, established by the law and tasked to review and report on implementation by the time the bill applies Jan.
