Privacy Commissioner of Canada Philippe Dufresne issued a statement supporting the Federal Court of Appeal ruling that found Facebook violated Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act between 2013-15. The investigation originally began in 2019 and found Facebook did not obtain lawful consent from users to process their personal information and also did not adequately protect it. Facebook is required to submit plans to the OPC on how it will remediate the issue within 90 days.
The U.S. Department of Commerce proposed new requirements for developers of advanced artificial intelligence and cloud computing providers to demonstrate their products are safe and resilient to cyberattacks, Reuters reports. The proposal, issued by the department's Bureau of Industry and Security, would establish mandatory reporting requirements involving the development of "frontier" AI models and cloud systems.
Political leaders in Australia are considering placing a minimum age limit for social media users, The Washington Post reports. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced legislation will be proposed before potential elections in 2025, but the government has not yet decided on an exact age limit while grappling with how such a ban is easily circumvented or ignored.Full story
